Cordyline australis, an abundant species of Cabbage Tree is a rapid inoculator of biodiversity. It is a pioneer, meaning it will thrive in the open sunlight and exposed land until bigger natives shade it out. Commonly used early in revegetation endeavors. C.australis injects life into the area, hosting the Kereru with often dense fruiting. If leaves are left to decompose after falling, it can increase soil fertility and encourage more earthworms.

Care

Young Cabbage Trees are keen on access to moisture, so it is prudent to plant near rivers, in wetlands/swamps or hillsides with some seepage. Plenty of sunlight will help and avoid heavy frosting zones.

As with most natives, it's a good idea to control for pests and weeds. It is particularly important to avoid planting as solitary individuals out in the paddock without fencing, as stock tend to rub on the trunk and damage the roots.

Size

Can grow up to around 20m tall
